Coral Reef Case

Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Corals are colonies of tiny living animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, and are formed by polyps that live together in groups. The polyps secrete a hard carbonate exoskeleton which provides support and protection for the body of each polyp. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters. Also coral reef is a reef consisting of coral consolidated into limestone Often called “rainforests of the sea”, coral reefs form some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. They occupy less than one tenth of one percent of the world ocean surface, about half the area of France, yet they provide a home for twenty-five percent of all marine species,[1] including fish, molluscs, worms, crustaceans, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates and other cnidarians.[2] Paradoxically, coral reefs flourish even though they are surrounded by ocean waters that provide few nutrients. They are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, but deep water and cold water corals also exist on smaller scales in other areas. Coral reefs deliver ecosystem services to tourism, fisheries and shoreline protection. The annual global economic value of coral reefs has been estimated at $US375 billion. However, coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, partly because they are very sensitive to water temperature. They are under threat from climate change, ocean acidification, blast fishing, cyanide fishing for aquarium fish, overuse of reef resources, and harmful land-use practices, including urban and agricultural runoff and water pollution, which can harm reefs by encouraging excess algae growth

What is the difference between a reef aquarium and a coral reef?
Q: I have heard that there is a reef aquarium and a coral reef but dont know the difference.
A: A reef aquarium is a coral reef that is inside an aquarium (artificially placed) whereas a coral reef would be found in the sea.
How many reef safe fish can i put in my 30 gallon tank?
Q: i have a reef tank i am setting up i want to put some fish in with my corals i want to get maybe 4-6 small fish like dartfish, cardinalfish, six line wrasse, blenny, jawfish and a dragonet. do you think they will be to much.
and also how often
A: Sounds very similar to my 36 gallon reef. As long as your willing to do the weekly 30% water changes and have a large enough cleaner crew you should be ok. I have 1 clownfish, 1 rusty angel, 1 sixline wrasse, 1 mandarin goby, 1 lawnmower blenny, and 1
Why does the whitetip reef shark live in warm, shallow water?
Q: Also, what are the benefits of the whitetip reef shark living in this particular environment?
My son is doing a report on these sharks and this is the one question we can't find the answer to.
A: Because many edible creatures live in warm shallow water.
The Spill: Reef Survey Shows Decrease in Fishes & Corals
The researchers chartered two BVI sailboats - Serendipity captained by Trish Baily, and this year joined by Sandcastle captained by Rik Allen and mate Ann Gracie, both BVI Charter Yacht Society members. Reef Check BVI scuba teams went underwater with 100 meter measuring tapes, underwater pencils, tablets and cameras in hand. For every hour counting fish, invertebrates and surveying coral, there were countless hours of preparation, training and pre-survey work.
